Dr. Alexander Sudarshan has practiced ophthalmology for nearly 20 years, 15 in the Rio Grande Valley. The proud father of three, he has a special interest in pediatric ophthalmology.
Dr. Sudarshan received his bachelor's degree in mathematics with honors from Yale University. He is an honors graduate of the University of Texas medical school at Houston and won the outstanding intern award at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas. He trained under the internationally famous ophthalmologist, Dr. Richard Lindstrom, at the University of Minnesota, and The Berkeley Eye Center of Houston and has furthered his education with courses led by national experts from New York and California. Dr. Sudarshan is a board certified surgeon and an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
His hobbies include playing the contrabass clarinet in the McAllen Symphonic Band and competitive fencing (sword fighting). He is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Italian.
Dr. Ronald Hirn, a resident of the Rio Grande Valley since 1985 has more than 20 years experience. He is licensed as both a Therapeutic Optometrist and Glaucoma Specialist.
He received his bachelor’s degree and doctorate in optometry from Ohio State University and obtained further education in ocular therapeutics and as a Glaucoma Specialist at the University of Houston. In 2006 he was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry after having participated in both extensive written and oral examinations and approved by a panel of leading optometrists and vision scientists. He is the only Fellow of the academy practicing in the Rio Grande Valley.
Dr. Hirn is published author who enjoys creative writing and has won the Tom and Ann Washington Award, third place, for this short fiction.
Dr. Hirn is fluent in both English and Spanish.
Dr. Christina Bui was born and raised in South Texas. She received a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary biology at Rice University in 1997. She then graduated from medical school at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2001. In 2005 she completed her ophthalmology residency while her husband Dr, Murali Mamidi studied anesthesiology at the prestigious Vanderbilt University. In 2006, Dr. Bui did research at Duke University, and has also spent time doing missionary work in India, where she performed many free eye surgeries for impoverished patients.
Dr. Bui studied under the most famous ophthalmologist of our time, J. McDonald M. Gass M.D., a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology. Her other professors include Dr. Denis O'Day, a well known cornea specialist at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Bui has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented research papers in the field of glaucoma and pediatric ophthalmology.
Dr. Edward Marquez was born in Brownsville, Texas where he graduated cum laude and received a bachelor's degree in history and biology at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He then pursed a doctorate degree in optometry at the University of Houston.
In 2005, Dr. Marquez obtained an externship at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where he studied low vision and post corneal transplant contact lens care. In 2006, Dr. Marquez received the prestigious David J. Kerko Low Vision Award for his outstanding dedication and work in low vision. Upon completing his studies at the University of Houston, Dr. Marquez decided to practice in his native town of Brownsville, Texas where he plans to raise his daughter. Dr. Marquez is a Therapeutic Optometrist and a Glaucoma specialist.
